Abstract:
This paper discusses the relationship between modern Pashto poetry and symbolism. Symbolism is seen as a bridge between an idea and the mind. The background meaning of the symbol is traced and the difference between imagery and symbolism is drawn. Examples of symbols in Pashto poetry are discussed and great emphasis is placed on the poetry of Hamza Shinwari who is considered to be the forerunner of modern Pashto poetry.
