Abstract:
In this paper the origin of tasawwuf (mysticism) and Sufism is traced. The writer believes that the word sufi has been in existence since Jahalliyah (ignorance) and has been used for the first time by Abu Alhashim Kufi 150 A.H. Tracing further the origin of this word the writer has found that all holy and good people like the companions of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were known as the Sahabah and after their time they were known as Tabe'een. Mystic and Sufis, who are also holy person and good. Lead a spiritual life shunning the physical with its worldly desires. Their theology is tasawwuf and their philosophy is to follow the teachings of Islam to reach Allah. A Sufi is that abstinent devotee who has shunned all the desires of the world and spends his time in worshipping Allah. One such Sufi was Rahman Baba. His predecessor is Bayazed Ansari and his devotees who followed his school of thought. Rahman Baba has a unique place in Sufi poetry and he shows a great love and devotion for Islam. The prophet and Allah. In his love for Allah he has reached the last pinnacle and that is why very few can reach his heights.
