Abstract:
The importance of the use of discourse markers have been acknowledged by many linguists. They help bring cohesion and link within the discourse. Their active and appropriate use is imperative in all the languages. In the present study, we examine the frequency of the discourse markers used in Pashto writing and speaking among the youth. Different types and categories of them have also been described. The study shows that the discourse markers of Pashto perform a wide variety of functions. For that, including a lesson in Pashto grammar textbooks on discourse markers and training the teachers in their use may be of some help.
