Abstract:
Marsiya (elegy) is a poem that is written to commemorate the death of some one wherein he laments the death and expresses his grief. The genre carries particular importance in every tongue of the East and the West. In the beginning only personal elegies were written but with the passage of time the genre has become limited in scope and has been linked with a specific background the tragedy of karbala. This is why now-a-days Marsiya is regarded as a specific term which is interpreted as a poetic creation dealing with the causes and effects and what happened at karbalal. It highlights the lofty deeds and characters of those who participated in the battle of karbala. Since Marsiya is a poetic subject, therefore, it is composed in diverse genres including Masnavi, Naoha, Ghazal, Rubaai, and salam including some foke genres like tappa, charbita and nimakaye. In some areas of pakhtunkhwa like kurram Agency, Orakzai Agency and Bangash areas, the tradition of Marsiya writing is more common and, as such, it has came down to be written in local genres as well. These local genres include guftar, biani and sandara. This article throws light on the use of these local genres for the purposes of Marsiya.
